Growth Story Debate

I believe the immediate growth story they will try to promote (new CEO not withstanding) is the technology angle with a number of projects at Fort Saskatchewan with commercial potential.  For those of you who have been around the name for a long time you may remember Westaim which was spun off as a separate technology incubator many years ago with as I recall 3 or 4 potential technologies.

how old do you think we are?????

Oceaneleven please stop trolling other boards.  Following people around SH just adds to the mountain of spam and clutter.  It should be beneath you by now.  Your credibility took a big hit from what you posted yesterday, I felt you had to be disciplined.  "We get the behaviour we tolerate" Freud said.  Let's get together and win, recall Justin Trudeau. lol

Do you know if they get royalties from HPAL plants around the world. Murrin Murrin, Madagascar, ect ? Did Sherritt not develop/patent the technology? I'm curious because it Is my understanding that HPAL and Hydro Met are the preferred method of producing battery precursor nickel.
Comment by YourFriendo on Feb 04, 2021 10:43am
They don't. But their Tech division gets revenues from consulting with such operations.

I would believe there are lots of sulphide ore bodies that can be smelted and refined to make battery grade nickel.
Comment by thenorthvanman on Feb 04, 2021 2:40pm
There certainly are but none that have NDCC of 4.25-4.75$/lb. The price must rise to incentivize mine builds.
Comment by Sdbry75 on Feb 04, 2021 2:47pm
Yes there is for sure. I don't think it's so much the mineralogy of the ore body as opposed to the exsisting material flow to produce the products they sell. Glencore's partnership with First Cobat near New Liskeard interesting because if fully developed it would be the only battery suitable cobalt sulfate refinery in North America. The matte flowing through thier refinery in Norway ...more

Class 1 from Indonesia? They don't have any operating class 1 plants yet
Comment by Sdbry75 on Feb 04, 2021 2:58pm
Class 1- North Atlantic Upper Class 2, battery suitable nickel - Indonesia. Quite a differential between the prices for these products
Comment by thenorthvanman on Feb 04, 2021 3:53pm
They're calling nickel matte battery suitable?
Comment by Sdbry75 on Feb 04, 2021 5:02pm
No, that's not what I meant. Perhaps I'm confusing things unessecarily. Lol. One of the products that comes out of thier Indonesian operations is battery suitable nickel. Vale is referring to it as "battery suitable upper class 2 nickel" in some of thier quarterly reports. I don't think Class 1 nickel is reporting to batteries anywhere in the world. Regardless, my guess is ...more

Usually class 1 is what is referred to as battery grade nickel being 99.9+% pure. As far as I know Vale only produces nickel matte from Indonesia. This is a high nickel content ferronickel. Generally, this would not be considered battery suitable as further processing to remove impurities are required.
Comment by Sdbry75 on Feb 04, 2021 6:11pm
Yes, the flow of matte material coming out of Indonesia was designed to feed Inco built refineries at Matzuka Japan, South Korea and the battery specific nickel sulfate refinery in Dalin China. The nickel products coming out of these refineries are for specific uses, with some overlap. They also have streams of low grade ferro nickel to feed 300 series stainless furnaces in China. I thought I read ...more

northvan That is my understanding as well.  Battery manufacturers use high purity 'battery grade' nickel sulfate as a chemical feed to form the NMC (etc) cathodes. High purity (class 1) elemental nickel can be reacted to form that nickel sulfate. Alternatively, (class 2) ferronickel can be further processed to convert it to nickel sulphate. I believe the cost advantages favour the ...more

Yes, high purity but not 99.9 high purity.

Sdbry " I don't think Class 1 nickel is reporting to batteries anywhere in the world." You lost me. My understanding is that low cost producers of Class 1 nickel are the winners in the battery game.  >>>We forecast that nickel demand over the long term will be driven by class 1 nickel, primarily for use in batteries. Although both oxide and sulfide ores can be ...more

I'll dig up the all the clues from Vale quarterly reports in the morning and share the links. Vale's battery suitable precursors are coming from Indonesia and sell at a discount to LME prices. They suggest that thier battery suitable precursors are not a Class 1 product but an upper Class 2 product. Class 1 from the North Atlantic gets a premium. Class 2 battery suitable doesn't. It ...more

Good discussion, which I appreciate, but none of it really matters. I think nickel prices are heading higher which will be good for Sherritt. Exactly in the direction that the worlds five integrated producers want things to head. Makes sense right, set yourself up for tight supply and rampant speculation in markets regarding nickel for batteries.

Here's a link to a report that presents a good overview of the situation. Note that stainless steel was historically, and still is, the main demand driver for nickel (SS production used to use class 1 Ni as an input but now utilizes primarily nickel pig iron). https://www.mckinsey.com/~/media/McKinsey/Industries/Metals%20and%20Mining/Our%20Insights/The%20future%20of%20nickel%20A%20class%20act ...more

I'm not really interested in what McKinsey has to say. I don't care what they have to say about nickel from Fort Saskatchewan, previously Manitoba, Ontario, Newfoundland, Clydach, Norway. Murmansk, Norilsk and most importantly, Norway. There opinion, although intelligent, is irrelevant.
Comment by Sdbry75 on Feb 04, 2021 10:57pm
They should quietly go about thier business and not bother any one for quite some time. That would be my marketing strategy. Don't bother anyone for a while.
Comment by autofocus111 on Feb 04, 2021 11:54pm
To understand the nickel story, you have to understand the key driver (SS) for nickel and the inputs (Class 1 vs NPI and the respective ore types that feed into each of these). That report explains it and that's what I posted it for. I could care less about the EV projections it lays out (although it does explain the path to producing 'battery grade' Ni sulfides). The EV end-market ...more

I imagine you loaded up on Westaim at 300$ and sold it at 1$ and claimed to everyone how successful of an investment it was.
