RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:RE:My 2 cents
These companies do not provide the "bare minimum". If that were the case no one would put their family members in for-profit care homes. Also, many of these for-profit care homes offer luxury accomodations (that you pay for out of pocket) that are unavailble in government-run homes for the poor.
The idea that the only way to be profitable in a service-based industry is to offer the bare minimum to clients is moronic. I don't know who thinks like this but they aren't business people is they think this is the only way to maximize profits.
My mother worked at a Chartwell retirement residence in Oshawa, Ontario for over 10 years (before retirting two years ago) and she loved the company. She was a PSW and was a full-time UNIONIZED eployee (from the day she started).
This picture of seniors in for-proft care homes as Charles Dickens-esque paupers is so bizarre considering that many of these homes charge more than government-run homes and therefore offer more amenities, better living conditions, larger rooms, etc. This is why those who are well-healed enough chose them over government-run homes.
You can run a successful and efficient for-profit care home at the same time. It isn't one or the other.
