I would be interested to see where you got your data on how the short position has skyrocketed in the last 15 days. I was able to find that the short position dropped by 4 million shares in September but I don't have anything more current.
I don't monitor short positions but I can see the value in doing so.

No indication of a runup in the short positions.
That said, is there something up with SU in terms of some bad news coming in the 3Q report?
Based on past experience, I would say that there is a high probability that there is something going on. However, the price action would not indicate that there is something really bad that has happened. If there was a material event, there would mos tlikely have been an announcement of some sort. My gut feel is that Fort Hills has continuing problems and that the date for full production has been pushed back a quarter or two.
