I know , I was one of the people being investigated. At the enquiry, they asked me why , I bought the shares, I replied it was already in the press at the time I bought and anyway why were they not investigating the Liberals ? The lawyers started laughing , I asked what was so funny , they answered are you really that naive?
Anyway, I later learned that it was the president of Petrofina (a Quebec political hack ) who had initiated the deal when he learned that the Liberals wanted to buy Gulf Oil. The Fina boy had sold all his shares in Petrofina before the take-over and then re bought them off-shore. Got away with it , but died from lung cancer shortly after. Just can't beat karma sometimes !!
Small world my friend!!!
The oil business in Canada really is a small world, I was rather lucky to have gotten involved in the business side of it , where I met very many people across many different professions . It made me a sort of Forest Gump as looking back I almost always seem to have been there when interesting things were happening.
Contrary to the Chinese adage , it was a benediction rather than a curse even though it felt very much like a curse sometimes !!
Yep had a similar experience in my life dealing with northern pipeline issues, the Berger Commission, Pierre Trudeau's National Energy Policy and Jack Gallager's forays in the Beaufort to name a few.
Look at them fondly now - but not so much from time to time back then...lol
