I recall back in the day a close of friend of mine was involved in foreigh affairs for the Government with a specialization in European affairs.

Back then the Europeans had a thing called the Common Agricultural Policy or CAP.

He often referred to the CAP as the Common Albatross Policy...lol

The point that your European friends are making has been a problem for many years.  As a case in point - try to buy a dozen eggs in Europe....you can buy 8 or 14 but not 12 eggs.  The functionaires in Brussels dictated that 12 was not allowed!!!  I must admit that in my simple mind, I cannot see the benefit of such a rule.

Your comment about conservative leanings is well taken.  My concern about this seen in spades in the US where the extremes at both ends of the spectrum are dominating and won't talk to each other and legislate COMMON sense things.  Worse yet they don't represent the vast majority of the people in the middle.
