Petro Canada, EV charging stations?

You have to ask yourself after the review from Suncor? They said they could increase their profits from the stations 40% in the next three years? Are they thinking about EV charging stations? Wow, wouldn't that be something? That would blow everybody away. Talk about profits. Both ICE and EV together in one great real estate location. Plus add in convenience stores. What a turnaround story.

They are undoubtedly looking at that option. Locations with repair bays become candidates for battery storage, as you need a way to charge vehicles during prime time (when business utility rates are outrageous) and refill during non peak hours.

Well it will be interesting to see how this plays out. Right now with an ICE you don't have a choice - you have to refuel at a gas station. With an EV right now you have the choice of doing it at home or at a EV dedicated charging station (for example Chargepoint).  Larger chains like COSTCO in the US are beginning to install charging stations at their stores.  For travellers, a ...more

So my question is who in gods name is our electric grid going to handle all these chargers? Just got done a couple of power outages last couple days granted they were weather related.  Not a lot of fun.  Plus last week I believe the Alberta grid sent out notice they were close to there max.  Wanted people to cut back on power usage.    Want to see outrage start seeing ...more

Great question!! If people who will be buying EVs charge their cars at night which will most likely be the case for the majority, there is sufficient electrical genetation capacity to meet that demand for the foreseable future. The problem is that the electrical grid in North America (don't know the situation elsehwere eg Europe) is fundamentally unstable and prone to brownouts and blackouts ...more

Switzerland Considers Electric Vehicle Ban To Avoid Blackouts By Tsvetana Paraskova - Dec 02, 2022, 5:00 AM CST Switzerland could limit the use of electric vehicles (EVs) in cases of electricity supply shortages this winter under a new four-step plan to prevent power cuts and blackouts.      To ensure energy security this winter ...more

Electricity prices vary widely across Canada: 2021: Rates of Increase of the Cost of Power 2022:  This is a major factor that is ignored when enforcing national policy across the entire country regarding the move to abandon ICE vehicles for EVs, and helps explain why there is a big pushback from those in the high cost electricity areas. In April 2022 in Edmonton or Calgary ...more

the east benefited greatly from the huge james bay hydroelectric project.  Many do not know that project was rammed through without first nation consultation or approval. The hypocrisy is several pipeline projects in the west were cancelled even with ~75% approval rate from the first nation tribes along the right of way.  Those who disapproved were unelected 'spiritual leaders' ...more

Great discussion folks!! I actually had the honour of dealing with the Cree Nation many years ago. Before getting on with the meat of what I want to say, I feel compelled to provide a humourous story.  At a large gathering, Mathew Coon Come, who at the time was the Grand Chief of the Cree got up to address the meeting. He started off by saying that he was glad that Christopher Columbus was ...more

unfortunately, too many people think hydropower is clean power. However, i see it as cleaner power (depending on individual project) but it's not always clean as appear on surface. 1. hydro damming floods a huge swat of land, all vegetation and remaining animals matters decompose in absence of oxygen will emit nasty GHG (CH4, CO, H2S, SO2, way worst than CO2) for years if not decades. 2 ...more

hehe pretty much nailed it Its Funny I live 3 hours from Calgary and 3 hours from Saskatoon SK.   Basiclly the number 9 highway (turns into the 7 once you hit Sk border) Runs from Calgary to Saskatoon.   More then a few times people have left one of the citys in a EV and ran out of power halfway inbetween.   A local welding shop has to sent out a truck with a welder ...more

And in Quebec, the gov CAQ  will force the people to cut their heater electric system  during the day  to save the electricity for the peak demand during the night to recharge the EV, what twisted CAQ gov. And Fizzz said  they do that in China, so  Quebec will be like the China with all their restrictions of the freedom. This is very scary for the future quebecer people ...more

The James Bay Agreement was a win/win for the First Nations and Quebec. The First Nations got about $225 million for surrendering some of their traditional lands, clarified title to vast other lands, retained vast hunting and fishing rights and better access to modern day services like medical, banking, etc.. Air Creebec was established around 1981, with some of that money, has about 350 employees, ...more

thanks for the new info. However, i still feel that quebec stole the james bay from the first nation.  $225 million one time payment is a small pittance for the size of future revenue hydroquebec gonna receive.  One time payment is a good way to steal something from the naive, just like how russia sold Alaska to USA  for a mere $7.2 million cash, sounds a lot in 1867 but at today $, ...more
