You don't lose money unless or until you sell ; they did , so they did

Nope.

Paper losses show up in the Portfolio section of the financial statements since the fund or client still owns the shares. Funds show the number of units owned, total cost, and total market value as at say, December 31, 2022 for this year end. The bigger the difference between the total cost and curren market value, the more it stands out like a sore thumb, especially if a fund or institution invested a large percentage of its money into the name.

Crystalized losses (i.e., after the shares are sold) do not show up in the Portfolio section as the shares are no longer part of the portfolio, though it obviously would affect the total or average annual return for the investors, but that would occur no matter what.
