EGRIFTA SV (tesamorelin for injection) is approved in the United States for the reduction of excess abdominal fat in people with HIV who have lipodystrophy.

I have come to know Rusty Leonard personally and he certainly is none of the things you mentioned. Asking a question doesn't make one foolish, quite the opposite.
