News election candidate murdered

News election candidate murdered

Mexico’s state governors are concerned that voters might be prevented from attending polling booths due to tensions in some parts of the country, notably Guerrero.

But in Oaxaca there has to be another worry: that candidates might not live through the nomination process.

A candidate seeking the Democratic Revolution Party nomination for federal deputy in the state’s Mixteca region was killed late Tuesday along with his driver and another party official.

Carlos Martínez Villavicencio was murdered while traveling on a highway 15 minutes from Santiago Juxtlahuaca. Gov. Gabino Cué said robbery was not the motive; the assassins’ intention was to kill the candidate.

The president of an indigenous farmers’ group said it was evident that “power groups” were attempting to destabilize the region during the electoral period. Israel Ramírez Martínez of FNIC said the Triqui region of the Mixteca has become a hot spot for violence despite peace agreements among various organizations.

The municipalities of Juxtlahuaca, Putla Villa de Guerrero, San Juan Mixtepec and San Sebastián Tecomaxtlahuaca are among those affected.

Ramírez said the slain candidate, a former mayor of Santiago Juxtlahuaca and current state deputy, was well known for his political and social work.
