    • Carl Icahn sued Occidental, calling the $38B deal to buy Anadarko "fundamentally misguided" and said a sale of Occidental might be better for shareholders

    • The lawsuit said Icahn is seeking new information to determine whether to rally shareholders to call a special meeting to elect new board members, and argues that the Anadarko deal is hugely overpriced and puts Occidental at risk if oil prices fall

    • Years of costly exploration and frantic buying sprees have gutted shareholder returns in independent Permian drillers, but

      supermajors can't be counted on to step in to buy the distressed companies

    • Some majors have said that they are wary of buying smaller rivals when would-be sellers are demanding premium payouts

      and global crude prices are under pressure from ample supplies
