This is the harsh reality of failed forest policy in Canada. Until there is proper stumpage applied to our crown timber, we will continually face this type of penalty from our neighbours to the south. The big players have been getting access to public timber for next to nothing. Not saying our system is wrong, but it does not jive with the US approach where timberland is essentially privately owned or bid upon. Hopefully the financial burden is not crippling....and it certainly will bring about further rationalization and a shift in some strategies.
