Grid meeting

While frustrating we don't exactly control our destiny, work continues behind the scenes:

https://yukon.ca/en/news/statement-premier-pillai-critical-minerals-and-energy-meeting-minister-wilkinson

Key quote: "was also pleased to be joined by representatives of industry groups with mineral interests in the territory, including the Yukon First Nation Chamber of Commerceand senior mining companies invested in Yukon projects, as well as local explorers and producers."

I'd bet my last dollar some combo of WRN/Rio/MMC were in on that meeting. However, makes no sense to PR that. We'll just continue on with permitting while other developments unfold.

jclarke, you were spot on with some combo of WRN/Rio/MMC being in attendance. Answer from sandy when I asked whether any of the aforementioned companies were in at the meeting. "From what I’ve hear it was a very productive meeting, Western and Mitsubishi were in attendance and Rio was invited.  The focus of the meeting was the grid interconnect and I hear the meeting was very ...more

Nice to see Mitsubishi is taking an active role.

She sent an update confirming that Rio was there as well. So everyone was there. "I just received confirmation from my team taht Rio was in attendance at the meeting. Thanks, Sandy"

Yes, I can see why,  "Rio was in attendance at the meeting" they have everything to gain from a grid conection with their cheep option they have on Casino. 100% IMO M2

Paul told me that the entire reason behind extending an agreement between WRN and RIO was to have the direct leverage/influence of a very large corporation like Rio in these discussions.  Yes it benefits them, but also us.  RIO knows their efforts could lead to a situation where another suitor gets the benefits and rewards.  Yes they will play games and seek the lowest price ...more

Rio is waiting for a level of certainty that a grid will be in place and in a reasonable time period. That level of certainty is unknown. A discussion with the right people, not likely. A promise form the right people, not likely. A signed agreement, perhaps. A contract, that might do it. A completed line terminating at Casino requiring only connection, not necessary. IMHO.

Metal Yes when you say,,  "RIO knows their efforts could lead to a situation where another suitor gets the benefits and rewards." How many companies do you think would take on a project cost $3-$4 billion and pay WRN shareholders $800mil to $1B, knowing Rio already owns 9.8%, not to mention having put thier time and weight behind the project ? Paul had to do at least this much ...more

Why would anyone care that Rio has 10%  They don't have any more power at that level than anyone else on this board (unless I'm missing something here)...
Comment by Marine2 on Jan 13, 2024 2:39pm
Pingrove WHEN YOU say, "Why would anyone care that Rio has 10%  They don't have any more power at that level" Well, have you ever played Chess against a master chess player,, I have, you are beat before you get started. A master plyer like Rio, having a 9.8% start, has already wone the game and will leave verry little for us shareholders. Circumstances Paul found himself in ! ...more

M2, you will need to be a little more specific. How have they already won?  Theoretically Newmont could do a deal tomorrow and buy Casino and benefit from Rio's due diligence done to this point. Like I said - unless I'm missing something. You believe that I am. Please enlighten me.
Comment by EvenSteven27 on Jan 13, 2024 8:21pm
Pine, I hate to say this. Newmont is no longer interested in Coffee or Casino. They've thrown all their eggs into Newcrest and the Golden Triangle. I disagree with Marine, however. If Ranj pulls off commitment to the grid in less than 18 months, we WILL be double digit, and another competitor could come in. Just won't be Newmont. This will be the first time in history that copper and gold ...more

Just had a quick re-read of the Coffee FS. You would have to question why Newmont spent all that time and effort on drilling, permitting etc etc for per the FS - 455m After Tax NPV @5%. I would have thought this was a marginal project for a major 2m Oz of gold. Yes, granted gold was priced in at 1,200 per Oz per the FS -> as we know this has changed a lot in the interim but so have the capital ...more
