Short sellers – investors who bet against public companies by borrowing shares and immediately selling them with the expectation the price will drop so they can repurchase at a lower value  so why do brokerage firms lend the shares in the first place?   it has alwasy struck me odd  how you could borrow a share and sell it and yet the borrowed share can also be sold by the ...more

Best to call your broker to discuss however the brokers are making the shares aviable for those who are betting the SP will fall.  Brokers charge fees for those services etc so they get money back on those deals why the trader holds the borrowed shares.  Brokers also tend increase fees as they believe the SP may go up and those traders will be unable to buy back the shares.   ...more

Select55, the brokerage house lends out YOUR and MY shares to short sellers. So, they just make money from our holdings ...
