I suspect that the TAMDAR and other sensors added to the aircraft require constant calibration and monitoring. Since they do not directly affect the operation of the aircraft, I suspect that airlines could get lazy with their maintenance, thus affecting the data accuracy.

Most other means of collecting weather data with non-tamdar aircraft use the aircrafts sensor which need to be in calibration because the safe operation of the aircraft depends on it.

Don't get me wrong, I am not shooting at FLY here, just pointing out how fickle the aviation industry is in trying to make money off of it! TAMDAR has so many moving parts, Government procurement, airline profitability, and operating complex equipment that is not operated by you, but the airline as a side bar...
