The German group BASF plans to set up a plant in Bcancour to manufacture battery cells for electric vehicles.

The world's largest chemical group registered a month ago for the Registry of Lobbyists for "a possible project in the Bcancour industrial park for a battery production plan" and is already eyeing a piece of land south of Highway 30.

No economic stakeholder in the Bcancour region wanted to confirm or comment on the possible arrival of BASF. "We've heard about it. I hear about it, but we can't say anything at the moment," said Daniel Breton of Electric Mobility Canada.

Invited to comment, the Minister of Economy and Innovation suggested, for his part, that quebec's door is wide open to investors in transportation electrification. "The work we are currently doing is to convince foreign companies to come to Quebec and allow us to make the batteries," explained Monday the minister Pierre Fitzgibbon.

This battery element production project is the fourth in the making in Bcancour with those of Nemaska Lithium, Nouveau Monde Graphite and British Volt. The Legault government wants to create a strong pole of transport electrification.

"Bcancour, for sure, after having been hit hard in recent years from an industrial point of view because of the transition that is taking place at the manufacturing level, is an interesting pole for all kinds of reasons. First, because there is an industrial park that is extremely imposing," observed Daniel Breton.

However, nothing is known about the size of the plant BASF wants to build, the investment required or the number of jobs that would be created.
