Reco: the goal of discovering a petroleum system

The initial goal of establishing an active Permian aged petroleum system

A petroleum system encompasses a pod of active source rock and all genetically related oil and gas accumulations. It includes all the geologic elements and processes that are essential if an oil and gas accumulation is to exist.

The essential elements of a petroleum system include the following:

Petroleum systems have two processes:

These essential elements and processes must be correctly placed in time and space so that organic matter included in a source rock can be converted into a petroleum accumulation. A petroleum system exists wherever all these essential elements and processes are known to occur or are thought to have a reasonable chance or probability to occur.

You are aware that the excerpt you posted above is stating that hydrocarbons, specifically the gas and condensate, has not been found in analogous formations (of Albian, Cretaceous, and Barremian ages) and that jumping to conclusions that a rock that is not of typical age or thermal process maturity does not preclude that formation from indeed being a source rock. This has nothing to do with the ...more

No, I wasn't aware that my post would cause such a stir.  Be still my heart. The only point that I was making:  A Petroleum system could be identified without the finding of commercial agreggation of hydrocarbons, being found at the same time. If I understand the purpose of Recaf's three wells it's to identify a petroleum system.  In fact, this is a cut and paste from ...more
