RET bid / ask games

Bid was $1.41 (25 board lots pesumably meaning 2500 shares), ask at $1.59. I put in an order for 10,000 shares at $1.42. Bid immediately, as in not by human hands moves.to $1.43. I change my order to $1.44, and again the second I hit send the bid moves above mine to $1.45. I move to $1.46 and again bid moves immediately above me to $1.47. I stopped at.that point. Cancelled the order. Bid immediately returns to $1.41. I didn't expect to get filled but the automated manipulation going on turned me off. Does anyone buy the voting shares?

Most of the volume on the non-voting & voting shares are done off exchange by market makers (e.g. A shares have 325K total volume today, but only 162K is actually on the TSXV).  There's a lot of games that happen on there IMO.  I think you just set a price that you're happy with and let it go. There's some algorithms going on that exceeds my little account access.   ...more

" I think you just set a price that you're happy with and let it go." That's pretty much it.    Algo traders hate people that do that.

Yes. Lots of games being played on the voting shares. They brought the price down feom 1.60 to 1.21 on less than 2,000 shares over a couple of days. I would hit the ask and my trade would get buried on alternative platforms.

That's just algorythms, someone has an algo in stating to maintain the top bid until x price. Every time you bid, if its below that x price, the algo will up its bid above yours. If you keep upping your bid, eventually you will see the algo will not follow you above its max bid price. Been there, done that

Thanks for the explanation. I ended up picking up some RET.A. It had more volume and appeared to have less of that algo trading going on.

I think what they would need to do first is to get back to the TSX, maybe someone knows the rules on that? I don't think they would buy back shares when on the venture X, nor would they have any dividends, imo

Here is another thing I notice with this earnings. Usually they announce the 4 or 5 weeks after the quarter, this was when they were drumming up for positives, this says to me they want it on the under the radar. They not going to buy back shares or pay dividends only one is back to TSX, but they may not want them back. May have to change name and get one class of shares, Retimens would have to ...more

Sales for the four weeks ended June 1, 2019 Sales for the month of May (the four weeks ended June 1, 2019) decreased 13.3%. Comparable sales1 decreased 9.6%, primarily due to store traffic being down 7.9% as unseasonable weather conditions continued to be prevalent during the month of May. Like this, after this earnings report they bought 15 million shares for $3/share IMO  ...more

Becoming much more common it seems. Not good for the markets imo. https://stockhouse.com/news/press-releases/2022/10/06/scotiabank-launches-next-gen-algorithmic-trading-platform-with-bestex-research

Agreed. An exchange should be a place where only buyers and sellers match up.  Not some place a computer front runs investors.  The “liquidity” they provide is an illusion.  For Reitmans i think of them like little trolls under the bridge.  Building up a sizable position was a pain in the butt that took time.  You can drive a truck through the spreads which move ...more
