from megacopper on NFGLet's talk dirt instead of this tripe.
Ok I was talking to the Rock Doctor and it was a painful discussion to say the least. How they remember this stuff in their heads I'll never know. Anyways he wasn't feeling to well after the long weekend but at least he was coherent. Lol
So Diabase1 it sounds like you have got things figured out with your maps. The Rock Doctor was going on about some theory he had but I honestly couldn't understand it. I'll try and get more on that one later. This is my interpretation because he was using lots of geological stuff over my head.
But basically the ultramafic rocks (he got right excited talking about them. Lol) are deep seeded stuff from deep down (the good stuff with the gold) lies between the GRUB (Gander River Ultramafic Basic) Line and the DOG Bay line and this region of good rocks is not that wide according to the Rock Doctor less than ten miles from what he can remember but it varies. Basically he said the GRUB line goes from the coast by Ragged harbour down along Weirs Pond through Little Harbour (Gander Lake) and on down through the country just east of the Southwest River flowing into Gander Lake. He got excited about the great bend and Eastern Pond region and down through the country to Kepenkeck Lake. It obvious he really like that area down there. He said the Dog Bay line is the western edge of the Ultramafic rocks that starts out by the coast near Stoneville according to the Rock Doctor and runs down along ten mile pond (he likes that area for gold too) and down through the country somewhere and then he started rambling on about some weird geological stuff and his big theory about all the gold in Newfoundland and how it formed hundreds of millions of years ago but really he said it's not that old in geological terms and that's why that New Found crowd are finding so much high grade gold because it hasn't eroded off yet like more older geological formations in the world. Then he got all pi*sped off talking about John Harvey back in the Noranda days not giving him the budget to go up into Labrador looking for Base metals (he said Al Keats would have sniffed Voiseys out in no time but Harvey didn't want them up there in the boonies) and then they wouldn't give me enough money to go looking for gold on the island because they wanted base metals and they couldn't make their mind up what to look for in the early 80's because it was a transition from looking for base metals to looking for gold. We gave them (Noranda) the Duck Pond deposit but that wasn't big enough for them and then he had to go have another drink and that was all I got out of him because he was too busy cursing and swearing Lol. He did say the best place to find a mine is to get some old Noranda properties from years ago because they wouldn't spend the money to drill deep enough to find anything substantial. I could tell he was p*ssed off because they never had enough money to do what they wanted to do.
I'll tell you more about his theory on all the gold in Newfoundland when I can get more out of him when he's not so worked up. Lol Too much geological stuff for me. It was a painful discussion. Hard to keep him on topic. Late stages of alcoholic dementia I think. Lol He was talking about girls in there a lot about some hot secretaries he had over the years and it's hard to keep him talking about rocks long enough to get anything useful. Lol
Anyways I hope this helps because I'll never get that hour of my life back. Lol
For disclosure purposes the Rock Doctor is my Dad. I love him but sometimes I don't love the things he does. Lol
Go NFG!!!
