Opposition to wind is fierce in many countries, states and provinces. Local farmers are often split. Farmers who rent their land are wealthy and happy. Nearby farmers get nothing except the noise and obstruction of their view and they are angry. Often they fight amongst themselves.
In some countries such as Germany, from what I hear, the government shares the windfall of income for farmers amongst a broader group (geographically). In this way, everyone is happy.
Also, wind and solar are not base load electricity so their share of the total grid output needs to be small.
