Environmental studies Leonel proposes international organization to evaluate mining project in San Juan
He maintained that with the studies of a credible international scientific body it is possible to clear up doubts about the impact that the probable mining operation in San Juan could or could not have on the water.
SANTO DOMINGO.- Former President of the Republic, Leonel Fernndez, proposed the election of an international organization with high scientific solvency and credibility to carry out environmental studies that determine the viability or otherwise of the Romero mining project in the San Juan de la Maguana province .
Fernndez pointed out that there is currently a scientific and technological development that allows to mitigate and remedy the environmental impacts of the extractive industry. Leonel Fernndez ensures the 2023 budget is oriented towards re-election Leonel Fernndez assures the 2023 budget is oriented "towards re-election" “There are people who still do not believe in this and, therefore, what it is about is being able to share that knowledge and that information to give levels of credibility to the mining phenomenon,” he highlighted.
He maintained that with the studies of a credible international scientific body it is possible to clear up doubts about the impact that the probable mining operation in San Juan could or could not have on the water.
According to Fernndez, there could be reasons for sectors of San Juan, including the province's senator, to oppose environmental studies of the project being carried out only by the environment ministry.
Leonel says the DR cannot agree to pressure to install Haitian refugee camps Leonel says the DR cannot agree to pressure to install Haitian refugee camps "There would be reasons to oppose that, because we do not always guarantee transparency in the country, but if you involve the UNDP (United Nations Development Program), scientific and international institutions that deal with the issue of mining, we would be passing to another level," he stressed.
The former president stated that -proceeding in the aforementioned manner- it could be ensured that there would be sanctions in the event that the environmental studies carried out on the Romero mining project do not correspond to reality.
In this context, he stated that "if it is shown that we are dealing with proven mining practices that will not affect the water, the agriculture, livestock, then the stumbling block that currently exists could be overcome”. Fernndez issued these statements during an interview on the program El Gobierno de la Maana on station Z-101.
