You are each spot-on

Analysts are usually banned from asking good questions.  After all,
they are sell-side analysts and they earn their pay by greasing the wheels
to be in line for new capital issues.  If they ask a good question the CEO
will be offended and therefore delete that house from sharing in the spoils 
of ~5% commission for raising new money.

Therefore.

It is really up to individual investors to ask probing questions and to point out
that the likely answers are pure pivots and evasive.  CEOs know how bad
things are when they are bad.  They get coached ahead of time about how to answer
real questions.  Like politicians, the pivot and talk about something else
