Despite a decline in the energy and health care sectors, Canada's main stock index set a record high in early Monday trading to start the trading week on a strong foot.

It was a day for record highs among US stocks, as investors applauded a strong bounce in US job growth last month amid an accelerating vaccine rollout. The Dow Jones Industrials rallied 349.17 points (1.1%) to open at 33,502.38. The S&P 500 earned up 49.15 points (1.2%), to 4,069.02, hitting a new intraday record after closing above 4,000 for the first time on Thursday.

In world markets, the Nikkei was up 235.25 points to 30,089.25, the Hang Seng remained at 28,938.74, the FTSE remained at 6,737.30, and the DAX remained at 15,107.17.
