Galaxy Graphite soars 200% on discovery: Canadian market movers

On Thursday, the top TSX mover was BlackBerry (TSX: T.BB, Stock Forum). The stock gained 2.69% and was trading at $16.41 on volume of 4.9 million. The communications company appointed two new directors to its board: Richard "Dick" Lynch, retired Executive Vice President of Verizon Communications Inc. and Bert Nordberg, former Chief Executive Officer of Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX: T.MFC, Stock Forum) was the second most active stock on the TSX. It was up 0.21% and was trading at $14.44 on volume of 4.1 million shares. The financial services group reported net income of $1.7 billion, core earnings of $2.2 billion and a strong regulatory capital ratio of 211% in its year-end report.

Pinecrest Energy Inc. (TSX: V.PRY, Stock Forum) was the volume leader on the TSX Venture Exchange. It fell 6.06% and was trading at $1.24 on volume of 5.8 million. On Feb. 6, the petroleum and natural gas exploration, production and development company said its board of directors approved a 2013 capital budget of $136 million, focused on drilling, completion, equipping, tie-in and waterflooding the Slave Point light oil resource play in the company's greater Red Earth core area.

The second most active stock on the TSX Venture was Galaxy Graphite Corp. (TSX: V.GXY, Stock Forum). It rose 200% and was trading at $0.09 after 5.5 million shares changed hands. The exploration junior said it has discovered High Grade, Large Flake Graphite on its Buckingham project in Quebec.

One sample taken from the property analyzed for size distribution contains 11.5% graphitic carbon, with 54.42% large flakes in excess of 80 mesh.
