Rolling Stone praised The Secret Sisters for their “ethereal
harmonies” on the album while NPR commented that “Real life
sisters Laura and Lydia Rogers are as flawlessly retro as ‘Mad Men’ and
as lively and bold as Bettie Page, and their voices ring in impeccable
harmonies that soar straight into the Everly Brothers’ territory.” The
New York Times commended them for “…writing songs that hark back to
vintage country storytelling” and went on to say “it’s no wonder the
producer T Bone Burnett teamed up with them; they’re devoted to the
rootsy anachronism, the throwback with modern savvy.” The Fort Worth
Star-Telegram said, “Like orchids blooming in the swamp, The Secret
Sisters embody beauty amid harshness….[they] make music with echoes of
the past — everyone from the Everly Brothers and Kitty Wells to Simon &
Garfunkel and Emmylou Harris lingers in the background like shadows —
that enriches the present day.” And, the UK’s Independent wrote
“These songs bounce, buzz and bubble along with timeless life. And jeez
louise, those harmonies!”
“Cracker Barrel has always offered classic Southern food and fun items
updated for modern tastes to our guests, just as The Secret Sisters
embrace classic musical traditions and add their own unique modern
spin,” said Cracker Barrel Marketing Manager Julie Craig. “We are
excited to release an exclusive Deluxe Edition of The Secret
Sisters’ album. We know our guests will enjoy their great songs and
those beautiful sibling harmonies.”
“We grew up eating home-grown, Southern comfort food made mostly by our
grandmothers,” said both Laura and Lydia. “Cracker Barrel has always
been a top choice for us, because eating there reminds us of home and
the meals we shared so often with our family. We both have a soft spot
for meals at Cracker Barrel, which is what makes us excited about this
exclusive music program and being able to release Put Your Needle Down
in a Deluxe Edition format. We always want to give more to our
fans, so being able to offer two additional songs on the Deluxe
Edition CD is something that makes us very happy.”
The Secret Sisters wrote or co-wrote all but three of the songs on Put
Your Needle Down: Deluxe Edition. Songwriters featured on the album
include Boudleaux Bryant, Brandi Carlile, Bob Dylan, Polly Jean Harvey
(aka PJ Harvey), Phil Hanseroth, Tim Hanseroth, Angelo Petraglia, Gordie
Sampson, and Dan Wilson. The songs on the album are:
