WASHINGTON, DC--(Marketwired - August 26, 2014) - The HON Company, a leading designer and manufacturer of workplace furniture, achieved LEED silver certification for its Washington, D.C., Resource Center from the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.
As part of HON's commitment to sustainability, the company prides itself in its ability to create industry-leading office furniture solutions without impacting the environment. HON takes a lean approach to product design, manufacturing and facility operations. This allows the company to do more with less through rigorous conservation programs that minimize the use of natural resources, reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, all while maximizing efficiencies.
"At The HON Company, we are consistently developing more sustainable solutions across our company. Earning LEED silver certification for our D.C. Resource Center is truly an honor for us," said Shelley deSilva, Vice President of Sales for The HON Company. "It's a reflection of our company's dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable design."
LEED is a third-party certification program and premier benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Features of the resource center that contributed to LEED certification include:
- Views to the exterior from 98 percent of regularly occupied spaces
- Furniture systems that were made with low-emitting materials and recycled content
- Construction materials that were locally sourced and/or contained recycled content
- Lighting control system to limit electricity usage
- Green cleaning program limiting exposure and disposal of hazardous chemicals
- Proximity of space to public transit encourages use of alternative transportation
The Washington D.C. Resource Center, which relocated and expanded last year, is the largest of the five HON Resource Centers strategically located throughout the United States. The resource center is located in the heart of Washington, D.C.'s Golden Triangle business district (1101 Connecticut Avenue, NW, Suite 300).
Designed by FOX Architects, the 10,000 square foot resource center was inspired by the monuments of the nation's capital. The expanded space brings focus to HON's extensive portfolio of office furniture solutions and features a welcoming atmosphere highlighting crisp contrasts, linear lighting and a universal workstation concept that readily adapts to change with minimal facilitation.
