Spin Master marks 50 years of Rubik’s Cubes with colourful campaign

Spin Master Corp. (TSX:TOY) launched a yearlong campaign dedicated to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Rubik’s Cube.

Owner of the world-famous Rubik’s Cube intellectual property, the entertainment company plans to celebrate the iconic toy with a multifaceted, yearlong marketing campaign to inspire young problem solvers.

A symbol of problem solving, intelligence, creativity and perseverance, the Rubik’s Cube’s milestone yearlong celebration will include new launches and product collaborations, and the debut of an all-new mobile game called Rubik’s Match.

The company stated that one in every seven people in the world have played with the Rubik’s Cube, but most people fall short on actually solving one. This marketing campaign, dubbed “Make Your Move” aims to change that, focused on inspiring solvers.

Despite the toy’s age, Spin Master still has some new tricks for the old cube, including:

  • Rubik’s 50th Anniversary Retro Cube – Displayed in replica 1980s packaging is decorated with the original Rubik’s logo and classic-coloured stickers
  • Rubik’s Sensory Cube – Designed to be inclusive for the visually impaired community, this is a 3×3 cube with distinguishable tactile shape for each colour of the cube
  • Rubik’s Gridlock Board Game – The objective is to fit all of the pieces onto the board to solve each puzzle, a test of flexible thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Rubik’s Connected X – Bridges the physical and digital world of solving the Connected X, a Bluetooth-enabled 3×3 cube
  • Rubik’s Cubers – A collection of collectible characters to solve and display, including Batman, Ironman, Spiderman and Black Panther
  • Rubik’s 3×3 Speed Cube – Redesigned for competition use, the Speed Cube features stickerless panels, internal magnets for smooth movements, and adjustable tensions to create a customized cube experience

Limited-edition collaborations from pop culture names such as Barbie, Stranger Things, Wednesday Addams and Hello Kitty to famous names like The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, the Grateful Dead, Albert Einstein and Mr. Brainwash, to notable brands including Levi’s, NBALAB, U.S. Soccer, Mercedes Benz, Heelys, Tetris and even G Fuel.

“The Rubik’s Cube is an iconic puzzle that has permeated pop culture, captivating millions of curious minds for generations,” Doug Wadleigh, Spin Master’s president of toys, said in a news release. “As we celebrate this remarkable milestone, we will honour the Rubik’s Cube’s enduring global impact, inspiring new generations to explore the cube and encouraging past generations to rediscover it.”
