Ok I wiil say it

Nobody seems to see the elephant in the room  eh??? Commodities trade on macro events . Meaning regardless of what the charts say IF you go with charts, they are a distant second when it comes to news and numbers. In the case of oil, If china releases great news tomorrow, regardless of what the charts say, oil will go up.  And vice versa ofc.

Wouldn't be surprised if both directions happen.. meaning a sudden capitulation drop only to recover quickly. I'm actually hoping for that scenario as it will possibly hit key support of the 200DMA (or exceed it briefly forming a long tail) and giving oil traders oversold entry to build up buys on to resume the longer term rally. Could get lucky and see those lower BTE $5's at the same ...more

Case in point:  Today's headline that oilprice is highlighting in their red banner is.... China’s Oil Reserves Could Undermine OPEC+ Efforts To Tighten The Market
Comment by Snowballer on Aug 18, 2023 8:33am
I don't think there's too much there to your point lol it's not an elephant in the room. Oil, like any other commodity imo trades on technicals and supply demand estimates by global traders. The headlines or macro events are tail risks for sure but the daily technical business of trading oil is what drives price swings. The world's largest oil traders literally have techinal market ...more

There's a saying "does the news inform the charts or do the charts predict the news". Something like that anyway lol
Comment by Snowballer on Aug 18, 2023 8:44am
I didn't need headlines or a narrative to call for oil to return to $70's when it was around $84ish. It's a market that moves up and down like any other and the media paints new daily pictures and stories for us to watch lol. One day it's this next day it's that haha

let me retort...see this headline ...believe NOTHING that comes out of CHINA....dwdc "China is prioritizing confidentiality in its energy system to enhance its resilience to various challenges with a view to strengthening the country's national security"

So if we get some information about China, probably  the Biden administration  screwed up the information system, and don't forget what Biden said before, I WILL USE ALL THE TOOLS to control the oil sector,   and those tools  are fake news, fake information, lies, fake numbers etc. what  the democrat twisted mind.

China, China, China! What about Mexico? Their oil consumption has gone up 20% year-on-year. Plus they have stopped exporting oil and their brand, spanking new refinery is supposed to be up and running as of this past July. Their plan is to be totally self-sufficient to supply their growing manufacturing base. "The new China" they are called. The world's factory. Even the Chinese are ...more

Ummmmm.  Mex GDP is 1.4 trillion.  China GDP is 17.8 trillion, second highest in the world.  You read an article on Mex and now you think it should matter to markets?

65FO9A, I use the Leontief Input-Ouput model for an open economy in order to estimate oil price movements. Leontief won a Nobel prize for it, so it must be useful. It's a matrix equation. Crude as my home made application of Leontief's model may be, it is showing me that Mexico and others are becoming factors with increasing weight in future oil demand. That's because the rate of ...more

Red herring - A clue or piece of information that is, or is intended to be be, misleading or distracting. It sounds like you have built a fantastic model.  Unfortunately, it has led you to questionable conclusions.  20% consumption growth sounds sensational but put in context it is a red herring.
Comment by Kelvin on Aug 18, 2023 12:53pm
Well 65FO9A, we'll see won't we? Time will tell. With oil prices moving 10s of dollars on changes in marginal demand of hundreds of thousands of barrels per day, then we can see how so little change on the margins affects oil price in a big way for a given amount of supply. Or is that a distraction as well? Headlines shouting China's demand falls 100,000 per day and everybody goes all ...more

That statement by Kelvin was for informational purposes , he never said tomorrow , next week or next year , he was just pointing out the possibility of maybe the inevitability of that possibility. 30 odd years ago , it was all about Japan as China produced junk , now fast forward , Japan is a non starter and it's China , whose prosperity is increasing exponentially , so since The USA replaced ...more

Yes, finally someone who undersrands. Thanks CountryBoy69. I'm trying to identify long term trends. Btw, the political scientists who I know know orders of magnitude more math than most people on this board. How do I know?  Because I used a lot of math being an engineer. So, the political scientist people tell me that a favourite tool used to spread disinformation is to be selective ...more

CountryBoy69, Further to my past post. Political scientists have to take many factors into account when analysing polling data. Demographics, financial condition, age, gender, education etc. It's all math. Here's the latest that I read: Increasingly, more immigrants are swinging conservative in both Canada and the US. I asked my political science friend why? She lives in Haifa, Israel but ...more

Boy you nailed this part of the world and Afruca as well. I actually worked there in Gabon, Congo and Angola. Same deal as Latin America. If you ask any immigrant from these countries the number one cause of the economic disaster that they fled they will overwhelmingly say "corruption". Now they see it in our countries. Talk about visceral revulsion! And not as much repulsed by the ...more
