Copper...what's a pound in the ground worth?

Any guesses?  If we say there's 20 billion lbs in the ground what's that worth at $5 copper?  This is a reasonable metric for valuation of a mining project. It's done all the time on developing gold mines. At $5 copper what's the NPV of Nevada Copper if you discount it all out into the future? 25 billion$ 40 billion? 100 billion?  Is a pound in the ground worth 50 cents? 10 cents?

" Is a pound in the ground worth 50 cents? 10 cents?" Neither, they’re not worth a plugged nickel.   It may take you a while to get your head around this fact but pounds in the ground or what we like to call an ore deposit, is by nature a financial liability.  Why?   Because BEFORE those pounds can be converting into dollars, one must dig them out of the ...more

I've seen numerous gold projects valued by ounces in the ground...$100 $50 $200 even depending on cost of extraction. So why can't this valuation metric be applied here for a point of referrence?
Comment by westcoast1000 on May 09, 2021 4:45pm
It all would depend on costs, and uncertainties that could create surprises that increase costs. We have an underground mine working, so that uncertainty is largely gone. the implementation of the open pit mine has uncertainies associated with it, regardless of who pays for the pit construction.  Note that as the price of copper goes up, so too do the reserves. That is, a higher price ...more

Based on 253 gold deposits acquired from 1990-2013, Cipher calculated a median benchmark value for an ounce of gold in the ground at about $40 and established that 80% of the ounces were valued at less than $90. Clearly with gold much much higher the value of an ounce in the ground is much higher.  So why can't this exercise be done for copper in the ground?  If we have 20 billion ...more

Sure....I'd like to find a similar analysis for base metal deposits but so far no luck https://cipherresearch.com/reports/150601_The-Real-Value-of-Gold-in-the-Ground.pdf
Comment by bogfit on May 09, 2021 7:21pm
"Read Cipher's latest research report by clicking here." Fundamental weakness in their research:  latest report is 5 years old and is based upon the acquisition prices paid by only 7 major gold producers. Cipher (whoever they might be) can sit around and crunch numbers all day long since that was their job but it isn’t mine. They might believe that investors can’t depend ...more

Your missing the entire point.  There are buyouts of gold project not yet in production...they have many variables but at the end of the day you can say that it was bought for x$ per ounce in the ground.  What is a pound of copper in the ground worth?  What is the range of prices that copper projects have been valued at for the pounds they have in the ground?  Feasibility ...more

I don’t miss the point at all.  You keep demanding something no one can give you.  The Cipher “research” is fundamentally flawed and hardly applicable to even the small set of gold producers reviewed.  But okay, I understand.  You want to know what some major will pay for an imaginary amount of PH copper on some unspecified date, and you want it now!   What you really want ...more

Don't tell me what I want.  I'm asking a question and you obviously have no clue how to answer.  Every piece of real estate boils down to price per square foot.  A buyer considers lots of variables but at the end of the day it sells for X and there are so many sq feet therefore it sells for X$ per square foot.  Or acre, or ounces in the ground, or pounds in the ground ...more

"I've seen countless valuation analysis of gold projects..." "Countless" huh?  Gee, that’s a lot!  "I've been investing for probably longer than you've been out of diapers".  Gee, that's a long time! I don’t know why you simply don't take a look at the company’s web site and presentation; that should answer most of the questions ...more

When I evaluate a gold project I attempt to put a price tag on it in a takeover scenario...what are the ounces in the ground worth to a buyer...how much would someone pay for those ounces in the ground....I have not done this for a base metal resource hence my question.  Why don't you be a dik elsewhere?

You know what a real "dik" is?  It’s a clown who doesn't understand the primary difference between a copper one-trick pony startup and a major gold producer, and demands an answer to an illogical orange vs. apple comparison.   If you really want to learn what copper majors are paying for "pounds in the ground", there are only a few majors you need to research ...more

"Bre-X  ???" During that period, the market value of de Guzman's employer, Bre-X Minerals, went from nothing to $6 billion.  BusinessWeek notes that Wall Street's top analysts were extremely bullish on the stock.  Big funds poured money into the stock and the world's major miners wrestled for a piece of the action. The problem: there was no gold.  ...more
