So, that Trump fellow, eh?

Not good news for Sherritt.

If Trump gets in he will make it a point to get regime change in Cuba. This will kill Sherritt in my opinion. Helms-Burton Title III will allow Sherritt to be sued for using the Moa mine, formerly owned by an American company. That will be Trump's goal. Then he can build the Trump Towers in Havana. Here's the news.

It's Trump's party
Donald Trump won Iowa's Republican presidential caucus, the party's first 2024 nominating contest, as expected. The result showed just how much control the GOP frontrunner has over the party — and how the window for his rivals to mount a real challenge is closing.

Trump garnered about 51% of support, compared with roughly 21% for Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and about 19% for former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.

The four criminal cases Trump faces, including two related to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election, did not faze many caucus goers. Nearly two-thirds, or 64%, of respondents said Trump would be fit to be president even if he was convicted of a crime, while 31% said he would not be, according to NBC News entrance polls.

Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy dropped out of the race and endorsed Trump after he finished fourth.

In my view, Sherritt is facing a bleak future as the Presidential race rolls through 2024.

the ONLY human being on the planet Biden is almost assured of beating IS Trump.... so Trump as the republican candidate bodes well for Biden (if that is the outcome you want)

Whether Trump wins or loses the 2024 presidential election, my thinking is that 2024 will be miserable for the Sherritt share price as he scares enough people with his contending alone. Should he lose, I am willing to bet Biden recosiders the sanctions against Cuba in his second term.  So, 2025, 2026 maybe 2027 Sherritt could see a tiny tiny bright spot.  Just so long as the Helms-Burto ...more

Respectfully, I am not sure that Helms-Burton will allow S to be held liable for anything. Yes, American courts will almost certainly uphold decisions in accordance with H-B, but I seem to recall that Canada and Europe, possibly among other countries, lobbied to the WTO (?) about the H-B decision and the American position was found to be unenforceable. given that S management is currently ...more

Didn't know about the decision that it was unenforceable across international borders.  That would essentially make it a paper tiger already.

A bit of legal-speak, but a quick google search resulted in the following related to the (non)enforceability of HB claims: https://hillnotes.ca/2020/11/02/the-impact-of-the-helms-burton-act-on-canadian-companies-operating-in-cuba/amp/ *esp the two sections, "Canadian and international response," and "title III cases involving Canadian companies"   https://www ...more

Very interesting stuff.  Thanks for those links.  Makes for a great deep dive. You've motivated me to do a little googling as well and I came up with something dating to just one year ago: https://www.steptoe.com/en/news-publications/helms-burton-act-update.html Steptoe relates a case they were involved with for Exxon and its claims of loss.  Additionally it describes it has ...more
