The National Post reports in its Tuesday, Dec. 6, edition that the Canadian and Swiss ambassadors to the Dominican Republic have taken the rare step of jointly urging the country's president to let a proposed Canadian gold mine move to an environmental assessment, which would end seven years of government indecision over the project. The Post's Tom Blackwell writes that Christine Laberge and Rita Hammerli-Weschke touted in a news release the mine's potential to make "great contributions" to the Dominican economy, including the creation of hundreds of jobs. Toronto-based Goldquest Mining discovered a deposit that could be worth billions of dollars in the mountains of the country's southwest in 2012 and applied for an exploitation permit in 2015. That authorization would simply allow for an environmental and social impact assessment, with no guarantees the mine could proceed. However, amid an opposition movement led now by a Dominican politician who has been described as one of the world's most corrupt men, two successive presidents have refused to make a decision one way or the other. The two ambassadors said the environment ministry should at least be allowed to go ahead with the detailed assessment.
