News is Nice...

But it would be good to see less fluffy and more solid news like partnerships etc.  I understand that things need to be done in steps, but completing an engineering plant design?  Ok, so....

Hopefully next news will be of some form of partnership for their resin adhesive devision.  I think that's what is needed in order to get things going with the ethanol production.  atb

Lignol develops engineering design package for commercial biorefinery
4/18/2011 8:30 AM - Canada NewsWire

VANCOUVER, Apr 18, 2011 (Canada NewsWire via COMTEX News Network) --

-- Validates economic returns for commercial biorefinery -- Major milestone achieved with Pöyry Engineering

Lignol Energy Corporation (TSX-V: LEC), a leading technology company in the advanced biofuels and renewable chemicals sector today announced it has completed an engineering design package for a commercial-scale biorefinery that would produce up to 80 million litres of cellulosic ethanol (approximately 20 million US Gallons) and 55,000 tonnes of High Performance Lignin (HP-LTM) derivatives annually.

"Completing this milestone is a significant step forward in our plan to develop a financially viable, commercial-scale biorefinery and market our technology world wide," said Ross MacLachlan, President and CEO. "The design package and cost estimate are based on robust and valuable design data generated over the past two years through a series of extensive operating campaigns conducted by our scientific and engineering teams at our pilot-scale biorefinery in Burnaby, B.C."

The design package was developed with Lignol's engineering contractor, Pöyry (Vancouver) Inc., a global leader in engineering and management consulting in the energy and industrial sectors.  "Lignol's real-time pilot plant data added the degree of certainty to the design basis for our engineering work," said Ulf Tryggvesson, Managing Director of Pöyry's Vancouver operation. "Based on what we have seen, Lignol has one of the world's leading biorefining technologies and completing the next stage of investment grade engineering will provide a high degree of accuracy for a commercial project," he added.

The engineering studies for a commercial scale project indicate rates of return suitable for consideration by partners and investors.  Calculations have taken into account the recent price of crude oil, incentives for the construction of biorefineries and production of advanced biofuels along with pricing indications received from key suppliers and customers.

Additional campaigns in Lignol's pilot-scale biorefinery are ongoing to refine the design basis and equipment selection needed for scale-up in order to complete an investment grade design and cost estimate for a commercial plant.

They are going to be in the business of providing production plants so having a design is a milestone. The 30 million DOE grant is only available as a "contribution toward constructing a commercial demonstration plant"  so the plans may even be part of their post-September funding plans.

Things are really moving forward at  a racy clip here and , with the engineering design of the first commercial biorefinery  plant completed, we can look forward to the beginning of construction. Also, with patents in place, LEC can soon begin  marketing their technology worldwide.Process and production information gathered over the past two years  from results of  the ...more

Thanks for basically reposting the news release TheRock, but in terms of commercialization, what do you estimate would be a reasonable timeframe from announcement of a partner with deep pockets, construction start-up and completion of a refining facility, and ultimately when can shareholders realistically expect the $100 million in annual sales you're estimating in your post?  TIA

"Really good news to see that they are going into commercial production."I guess we must have read different news releass sanspeine.  The goal is to eventually go into commercial production, but at present it is a goal they are striving for, not news that they are actually going into commercial production. You should read, as TheRock had informed me to do in an earlier post ...more

I think what sansp was trying to say is that this is no longer a concept play but a realization of the concept , with deliverable products at a commercial scale that now appears to be profitable and technically doable. Its clear that the 2 years data from the pilot refinery have provided a wealth of data on the best processes and configurations of extraction routes. Those data have been considered ...more

There are some points I agree with you on TheRock primarily that LEC has moved past the "concept" phase as their processes have and are continually being proven.Where we differ somewhat is that IMO, LEC is still in the "Research & Development" phase where they are still researching ways to improve efficiencies in order to make their products and by-product (ethanol) not ...more

Is there not an old pulp mill at woodfibre that can be converted to a test plant. They would still have access to wood chips and have power on site and be close to vancouver. The real estate must be cheap if it is closed down and the company wold probably love to partner with Lignol.

Research and development hardly ever stops with any leading edge technology business. It is  a continous process before, during and after production begins. This is a second generation biofuel refinery which is definitely the way to go.Food based biofuel refineries have become too expensive, as prices of feedstocks such as corn go through the roof.At some point, a decision is made to conduct a ...more

Good point birchjunk.  I believe that is what the NR stated that LEC is now in the position to seek out JV Partners and investors.  How quick that happens is anyones guess.  We would all like it to happen yesterday I'm sure, lol.  atb
