Well look at that Sam.

The need for speed --- Leo should go crazy over this one.
Comment by SamDiego on Apr 08, 2024 12:57pm
I was thinking that myself. Actually it was not that long ago that leo was all about speed and then when the industry made the pivot leo did to and now denies he was all about speed. lol

Interesting article -- the speed is all related to fibre optic transfer rates.  This suggests to me an even greater need and larger market for products that improve the wi-fi capacity and capability in homes and businesses (like Edgewater's solution).   I suppose everything could be made with an ethernet port and hardwired into each premises network, but that's a lot of ...more

Are you suggesting this new tech will establish a new break point between "wired" and "wireless"  or ?? Like maybe retrofitting all existing buildings with fibre inside wiring? Not sure what you are getting at?

I'm suggesting that speeding up the transfer rate of fibre optics makes faster wi-fi transfer rates and capacity even more important.  IMO it is highly unlikely that the IoT will become hard wired only; wi-fi isn't going to go away.

I can agree with you there. Wireless is wireless and it's not going anywhwere which puts the technology changes back to the routers and appliances, etc. They can't just change half of the circuit -- it all has to fit together -- probably some good, some not so good.

Gee I really hate to be a naysayer but this new super speed thing is not going to benefit Yfi, and is in fact largely useless across the board, except in very specific use cases.  First, speed is determined by the wifi protocol in use. The fastest any wifi transmission can be is only that of the protocol. Who knows when, if ever, a protocol that could deliver this speed would be available ...more

Good summary Leo, I was wondering if you would be saying how easy it would be to swap out your ethernet cables with fibre cables. Of course there is more to it than that and it will not happen in a hurry, if at all -- but we are in an age of constant change.

I agree with all of the above.  I only provided my original comment because the original post seem to imply that this fibre optic technology would replace wi-fi.  I just don't see that happening.   If it ever becomes commercially available, then I think it could be a boost, but it is a long way off.  Fibre optic has been rolled out many homes in large urban centre and ...more

It's a good thing but the router and all of the end equipment has to be modified/changed to meet the parameters of the incoming fibre. That could happen at some point in the future but I don't think I will see it.
